AHS journalism staff, 1942

Standing proudly in his AHS Key Club letter sweater is my father, Buehl Berentson. Dad, who was born in 1925 at the present site of “Smiley’s Bottom,” was a strong influence in my decision to pursue a career in journalism. This photograph includes all or part of the 1942 AHS newspaper staff, complete with manual typewriter, photo prints and steno pads. On the blackboard is a quote from Harold Laski’s 1925 book: “A Grammar of Politics.” Laski, a British scholar who taught briefly in the United States, wrote: “A people without reliable news is, sooner or later, a people without a basis of freedom.” Hmmm. Thought provoking. We have lots of news sources, and yet there are those who would argue our freedom has been dramatically eroded in recent decades. Perhaps the key is “reliable news.” Discuss.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
