Colorized postcard July 1932

This postcard image, boasting a July 5, 1932 postmark, is among the Deception Pass images in the collection of Hugh and Lee Brainard of Oak Harbor. The Brainards were part of the history-minded “Spindrift” team formed in partnership with writer Dorothy Neil and accountant Mavis “Chic” Schulle. This pre-Deception Pass Bridge image was on a card addressed to Mrs. I Anderson, RR3, Madrid, Iowa. No report of how it came to be in the Spindrift archives, but as a newspaper columnist and historian Dorothy collected countless photographs, drawings, letters and clippings over the years. Dorothy has since passed away, and I met with the Brainards this week after seeing them at a memorial service for Chic. Together, the four brought joy to many in creative “packages” ranging from cookbooks to quarterly magazines.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
