Young writers honored

Dozens of children gathered Saturday, April 14 for an awards event sponsored by the Fidalgo Island Writers Guild. Literally sharing a special moment in the sun that afternoon at The Heart of Anacortes were schoolchildren who responded to the challenge of writing to the theme: “What Makes a Good Friend?” Pictured here with two of the winning writers are guild president and co-founder Ronda Rae Franklin (left) and Lara Dunning. Each contestant will receive a free compilation book, which will also go on sale to help fund future programs for young writers (look for a guild booth at Farmers Market, Arts Festival, Friday Night Art Walks and other community events). Fidalgo Island Writers Guild is a nonprofit organization of writers, authors, editors, publishers and avid readers dedicated to nurturing the literary arts for adults and youths. Members tutor in Anacortes schools and the Boys and Girls Club. They also sponsor events for writers, twice each month at the Anacortes Library.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
