Cake and accolades for Funk

“King for a Day” Wallie Funk enjoyed an afternoon of friends, family and fond memories at a public event acknowledging his 90th birthday. Funk, an Anacortes native, split a newspaper publishing career between Anacortes and Oak Harbor. Assisting him with the “candle ceremony” on his cake were Anacortes Mayor Dean Maxwell and Anacortes Arts Festival publicist Rita James. An audience of several hundred included sons Mark and Carl and their families. U.S. Representative Rick Larsen also stopped by to pay his regards. Among other things, Funk was honored with a modest gift in recognition of his one-man campaign to raise $100,000 for scholarships to the Northwest Marine Tech Center in Anacortes. Emcee was former Anacortes American publisher Duncan Frazier. More photos pending in the Activities section.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
