School volunteers honored

I’m not sure what was happening when I took this photo, but I believe Island View Principal Brian Hanrahan was explaining why he opted not to prepare a dessert for Thursday’s Volunteer Appreciation event. Anacortes School District School Board President Jeannette Papadakis told the crowd there are more than 900 volunteers in local schools. She and district volunteer coordinator Jayne Branch extended thanks to all, acknowledging vital contributions ranging from mentors to PTA members. District Superintendent Chris Borgen and school principals were also on hand to express their gratitude to the volunteers. Also acknowledged were those who volunteered to prepare more than four dozen delicious desserts, and Anacortes Middle School for hosting the event.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
