Anacortes dreams: 1890

This 1890 global perspective, featuring Anacortes as the central point of travel via ship and rail, seems preposterous today. But when it was distributed in 1890, one year before the city was incorporated, visitors to the island city included Great Northern Railroad executive James J. Hill. He spent four days in the Northwest “shopping” potential terminus points for his railroad. Among them: Bellingham, New Westminster, B.C., Port Gardner, Seattle — and Anacortes! It was in 1893 that Great Northern selected Seattle as is Puget Sound terminus. These history tidbits are from “First Views,” a book by Theresa Trebon with photos from the Wallie Funk Collection. The map was displayed at the recent Waterfront Festival in a booth hosted by the Anacortes Museum.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
