Join in Veterans Day celebration

Consider attending the 2012 Veterans Day event tomorrow (Sunday, November 11) at Causland Park (10:45) and then the Port warehouse (11:30). Among speakers will be Bud Strom (pictured here at 2011 event), who recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Bud attended school on Guemes Island and in Anacortes. He attended Mount Vernon Community College, University of Washington, UCLA, and Notre Dame. He was commissioned as an officer in the US Navy in 1944. Bud served as a weather officer in the Pacific Theatre in World War II mostly on Guam until his discharge in June 1946. Other speakers will be Navy veteran Captain Kevin Meenaghan and Army veteran James Falk.See More

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
