Port turnout strong

Once again, a community forum focused on planning in the area of Cap Sante Marina drew a large crowd. More than five dozen people invested two hours of their Saturday morning to the last of three public input sessions sponsored by the Port of Anacortes. Julie Bassuk and Rachel Miller of Makers Architecture and Urban Design presented numerous draft land use recommendations based on two previous public meetings and Port staff interviews. Pictured here is Miller during a review of the top ten priorities previously cited by citizens considering the future of the marina neighborhood. In addition to Port staff, the audience included all five port commissioners. City council members Cynthia Richardson and Brad Adams were also present, as were several city staffers and numerous representatives of civic organizations, the Chamber of Commerce and marine-related businesses. Highlights of the lively session included discussion of a possible convention center and its proposed location, as well as proposals for a small dog park and an area for RV guests. The Port will next meet April 8 in a joint session with the City Council.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
