Featured here today is a crowd scene from Yakima last weekend, when players on a talented Anacortes High School team scrapped their way into the 2A basketball state championship game against Pullman. This photo was taken by AHS Rhododendron (yearbook) photographer Mallory Estenson. Anacortes fans had plenty to celebrate over the course of three days, during which Anacortes beat two teams including top-ranked Lynden on their way to the Saturday night championship game. That final game went down to the wire, with Anacortes ultimately coming up a few points short against a strong Pullman team. They did come home with the 2nd place tournament trophy … and many great memories from an amazing season.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
