Humble beginning

Tommy Thompson’s Anacortes Railway orginated in 1965 with the purchase of No. 22 (pictured here), a 3 1/2 ton compressed air locomotive from the Homestake Mining Company in Lead, South Dakota. Built in 1909 by H.K. Porter Company, No. 22 had five-inch by eight-inch cylinders and 23-inch drivers. After shipping to Anacortes, the Railway’s back yard foundry and machine shop transformed the 0-4-0 to a 0-4-4 Forney type steam locomotive. Seattle Boiler Works constructed the all welded ASME boiler, which has a working pressure of 150 PSI and is fired with fir bark. It took Thompson, the builder, 1,700 hours over a period of five years to complete the 4 1/2 ton engine. About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
