America’s Cup coming here!

An estimated crowd in excess of 1,000 visited the Port of Anacortes Event Center on April 10, 2010 to celebrate BMW Oracle’s historic American’s Cup win. The sailboat that won that event was built right here in Anacortes. Above photo (taken by Don Wick, Director of the Economic Development Association of Skagit County) shows Mayor Dean Maxwell receiving a commemorative photo from BMW Oracle representatives Tim Smyth and Mark Turner. Now history repeats itself as members of the Oracle Team USA bring the 2012 America’s Cup to Anacortes this Friday, December 6, open to the public at the Anacortes Yacht Club (4-6 p.m.) and Watermark Book Store (6:30-8 p.m.). Author Julian Guthrie will be on hand to sign her book.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
