New jail walls go up

The skyline began to change this week at the south Mount Vernon site of a new 400-bed Skagit County Jail. Project Manager Marc Estvold informed the County Commissioners the project is on schedule for a Spring 2017 opening. He cautioned that even though the building will appear to be finished three months from now, complex interior construction work will go on into 2017. For those who didn’t realize it, local cities no longer have their own jails, so the entire County legal system utilizes the County Jail (currently in downtown Mount Vernon). County residents responded in August 2013 with a 73 percent “Yes” vote on a bond issue to fund the project.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
