New exhibit on horizon

I know summer weekends are busy, but if you find this city’s maritime heritage intriguing, put Saturday evening, June 4 on your calendar. At 6 p.m. that evening there will be a “casual opening” of a new exhibit titled “Explore Anacortes Waterfront History” at the Maritime Heritage Center next to the W.T. Preston. The free exhibit will feature new attractions including large panoramic photographs, vintage film clips of commercial fishing and impressive relics from the state ferry “Vashon.” Oh, and pack your dancing shoes, because at 7 p.m. there will be a “Plaza Dance” on the Depot’s brick plaza next door.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
