Maxwell ‘muralized’

It was only a matter of time. After all, Dean Maxwell holds the distinction of being the longest-serving mayor in Anacortes history! My thanks to Art Shotwell, who shared this photo he took Monday evening at the unveiling of a new Bill Mitchell mural honoring Maxwell. The inset photo is Bill the artist. Appropriate is the inclusion of a refurbished mural of the late Jim Rice (left), who served as mayor in a critical season following a change of government from the council/manager model to full-time mayor. Jim was Dean’s mentor, each coming to public office from the carpentry trade. Both honest, dedicated public servants! Thanks again, Art (http://www.AnacortesNow.com/).

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
