Salvation Army serves others

The Salvation Army Anacortes Corps continues a tradition of service that dates back more than 110 years here on Fidalgo Island. Among the many programs provided by The Salvation Army, those that particularly bring joy at Christmas are the Adopt-a-Family/Senior, Angel Tree and Holiday Food Baskets. Together, these programs help to ensure that hundreds of lower-income families in our community have an opportunity to receive gifts, have gifts for their children and funds to purchase food for a Christmas dinner celebration. This photo at the 2019 Community Christmas tree lighting features Capt. Theresa Williams (second from right) and a crew serving hot cocoa. Others in photo are Shelley, JP, Becky and Sierra. The next day the Salvation Army took time from a busy schedule to participate in the Lions Christmas Parade. Look for “Red Kettle” bell ringers accepting donations during this season. About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
