Parks come back to life

There is a story in this photograph, taken Tuesday morning from Rosario Head on south Fidalgo Island. Tuesday, May 5 was the first day of Governor Jay Inslee’s “Phase One” COVID-19 response plan. This initial element of the plan allows Washington citizens to visit public parks once again after more than a month of closure. If you look carefully at this image you will see a smattering of people on West Beach at Deception Pass State Park, “social distancing” as mandated. The boats also serve as evidence that recreational boaters and fishermen are eager to celebrate the season. Still closed are public schools and municipal playgrounds, as well as many types of businesses including restaurant dining spaces.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
