Fun with Canada Geese the past couple of days on a west side Anacortes beach. Dozens the first day, fewer the second. Beautiful birds … noisy when they come and go.
What a joy it has been on recent winter days to explore Fidalgo Island trails, beaches and byways. Although gray skies and cold temperatures stifle the initial desire to get outdoors, it is feathered friends such as those pictured in this collection that inspire, offering photo “rewards” for the effort. And all without leaving the […]
Hikes/walks provide exercise, relief from “incarceration” … and an opportunity to meet neighbors of the feathered variety. Some of these birds are more cooperative than others. The flicker is elusive, and the kill deer combines speed and camouflage to make things challenging. Always fun to come away with a photo or two.
Over the past several weeks I have collected an inventory of photos of “feathered Fidalgo friends,” otherwise known as birds. Images were collected at places including the lake, beaches and dunes of Deception Pass State Park, both sides of the bridge. At least one photo (immature bald) was taken in the Bay View area on […]
Fog on the water, dropping leaves give evidence of its arrival. You can smell it, feel it in the air. Crisp scenes become muted. It’s another Northwest autumn on Fidalgo Island, another glorious season of natural beauty.
Morning sun illuminates lush green seaweed blanketing the beach at the state ferry terminal on the west side of Anacortes. Crows and geese were busy foraging for breakfast.
I can’t imagine a better morning. My “breakfast time” adventure featured opportunities to photograph a number of beautiful Fidalgo Island birds, some of which offered songs. Also part of the morning but not photographed were herons and crows. Mostly little birds, the largest being the flicker.
What a wonderful adventure! My solo walk at Ship Harbor turned into a hike to wetlands, those exposed on the shoreline and those tucked away near the state ferry terminal. I saw one eagle, one bunny and MANY birds. All shapes and sizes, from hummingbird and kingfisher to blue heron and Canada goose. Many plants […]
A few photos of feathered friends, collected in the past couple of sunny days right here on fantastic Fidalgo Island! Get outside if you are able, keep your distance from fellow adventurers.
A mallard preens at the shore of a Fidalgo Island pond, displaying beautiful colors and feather patterns.
All across the nation, Audubon Society volunteers strapped on binoculars, spotting scopes and cameras to participate in the annual Christmas Bird Count. Among regional teams working today (Saturday, Dec. 28) was a local trio including (l. to r.) Kirk Patterson, Wendy Patterson and Neil O’Hara. By midday this trio had counted 32 species, including an […]
As others look on, a blue heron makes a landing among the treetops of March’s Point.
