Wind damage at park includes large trees

For many, the extraordinary mid-January 2021 windstorm is in the rear view mirror. Not so for many public park crews including those on both sides of the Pass at Deception Pass State Park. A combination of rain-saturated earth and sustained high winds contributed to downed trees, limbs and branches. Winds knocked down trees on both […]

The draw of Deception Pass

New Year rainfall let up on Sunday, January 3, a development that drew enthusiastic crowds to Deception Pass State Park: both Fidalgo and Whidbey sides. On this trip I ventured onto a trail that runs adjacent to the beach from the park amphitheater to the bridges. I have walked the same trail from the east […]

Woman in red

If you look closely, you will see a small patch of red. This is a fellow hiker, wrapped in a heavy red coat, who had passed me on the trail at Rosario Head. Just a few minutes later I looked across the water to see she her seated on the bench on Bowman Bay Trail, […]

I saw kayakers, paddleboarders, horseback riders, hikers, boaters and beach walkers. They were young, old … families and friends. I saw cameras, cellphones and binoculars, all being utilized to add images to memory […]

Coastal markers

U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey markers from the Bowman Bay, Lighthouse Point area. Grandkids and I have located similar markers on the North Whidbey side of Deception Pass State Park. I’ve also photographed a marker on an Anacortes forest trail.

Fidalgo fog

It is the season of fog, and the Northwest is still experiencing some level of smoke from wildfires to the south. Fog did not hamper the spirits of people yearning for outdoor experiences Saturday. At Rosario Beach, and again at Bowman Bay, adventurers ranged from hikers to families with children; from kayakers to scuba divers. […]

Red dragons

I walked to the edge of a Bowman Bay area pond in search of a great blue heron. Instead, I was surprised to discover a number of these “red dragonflies” among the wetland population of winged creatures. The more common blue dragonfly was on hand, too, but I focused my attention on these strange insects.

Beautiful Bowman

The surface of Bowman Bay sparkles in the sun as this pair of kayakers starts a late September adventure from the beach. This is a wonderful part of Deception Pass State Park, divided by the swirling waters of the pass but accessible by bridges.
