A group of Saturday morning paddleboarders heads for a serene corner of Bowman Bay.
This was a fun shot. Could be a setup for a joke: “A sailboat skipper, a kayaker and a family of three on a paddleboard meet on the bay …” Bowman Bay, midday Monday.
My morning started at West Beach on the Whidbey side of Deception Pass. I then headed to North Beach, and then crossed the bridge to Bowman Bay and Lighthouse Point on Fidalgo Island. I’m guessing sunshine and a desire to be temporarily free of COVID-19 “incarceration” prompted people to head for the outdoors with boats, […]
Rosario Head and Bowman Bay, framed in by the branches of a madrona tree on a bluff trail.
Rosario Head across Bowman Bay, as viewed from Vista Point on the southwestern tip of Fidalgo Island. Take the Lighthouse Point Trail from Bowman Bay for this view.
Water activity at Bowman Bay Friday included kayaks, canoes and sailboats, this one tied up at the floating dock. I also spotted a diver, and there were numerous people enjoying the beach.
“Viking boat” builder Jay Smith presided in November 2017 over the launch of yet another amazing vessel built in his Fidalgo Island shop. Master boatbuilder Smith apprenticed in Norway, worked in the Faroe Islands and Denmark, and studied under master boatbuilder Nils O. Ulset. The well-attended launch took place at Bowman Bay.
Summer sunshine draws people outdoors, as evidenced here on a recent visit to Bowman Bay on south Fidalgo Island. Anacortes Kayak Tours is operating again with restrictions, and area parks including Deception Pass State Park are open. Good to get out of the box!
Add this hike to your to-do list of summer adventures! Lottie Bay, accessible on a well-marked trail from Bowman Bay on south Fidalgo Island. If you’re up to it, a trail offshoot leads to Lighthouse Point.
Rosario Head from Bowman Bay trail.
Standing in the rain at Bowman Bay in Deception Pass State Park. A statue placed in tribute to young men who worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps, created by President Franklin Roosevelt during the Depression years of the 1930s. CCC crews completed many projects, both on Fidalgo and Whidbey island sides of the park.
What better way to enjoy the outdoors while meeting COVID-18 “social distancing” regulations. There was a marked spike in activity on the water Friday afternoon at Bowman Bay, but watersports provided a safe way to exercise and enjoy the sun without worry about a crowd.
