For three minutes Saturday (okay, maybe a BIT longer), Highway 20 at Deception Pass was closed in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the twin spans. Vintage cars were part of a procession to the south side of the bridges. Presiding over a ribbon cutting were alums of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a Depression […]
An important anniversary in the Pacific Northwest! A post from 1985: “Today, July 31, marks the 75th anniversary of the opening of Deception Pass Bridge (1935). This photo was taken during a mid-span celebration event on the 50th Anniversary of the bridge (1985). Among those pictured is Anacortesan Wallie Funk (center, with water carafe), who […]
Salvation Army donations are a family affair at the Bridge Christian Fellowship. A donation barrel stands year-round at the church. This load of food was bound for the “R” Avenue Salvation Army Food Bank this week as the Anacortes Corps gears up for Christmas.
What appears to be a bridge in this photograph is actually a support span across the dry dock at Anacortes Port District Pier 1. Passing up the Guemes Channel is the Island Explorer, decks lined with clients eager for a San Juan Islands adventure. Two whale watching excursion businesses operate out of Anacortes, eliminating the […]
It was snow geese that drew me off the highway, but when I discovered they were inaccessible I shot a few images of the spans known as Duane Berentson Bridge. There’s a public boat launch on the Skagit Valley side of the bridge. Stop in with a sack lunch.
Approaching LaConner from the Hole in the Wall, under “Rainbow Bridge.” That’s Fidalgo Island on the left, the Skagit Valley mainland and downtown LaConner on the right. This is the third major bridge linking Fidalgo Island to its neighbors: Berentson Bridge (a twin span over the Swinomish Channel on Highway 20); Deception Pass Bridge (actually […]
This was the view looking east Wednesday morning toward Berentson Bridge, one of two bridges linking Fidalgo Island with the mainland. The other is the colorful “Rainbow Bridge” in LaConner. A third bridge links Fidalgo and Whidbey islands at Deception Pass (actually twin spans, as in the case of Berentson Bridge).
I discovered this photograph of a “paintbrush” wildflower this morning while sifting through photos of the Deception Pass area. I admit I am eager to bask again in spring sunshine on the grassy bluffs of Fidalgo Island…
Pictured here is a blue heron, taking in the sights from a piling near the west shore of the Swinomish Channel. The channel marks the east boundary of Fidalgo Island, accessible by three bridges including the Duane Berentson Bridge pictured here. This property is owned by the Swinomish Tribe and will soon become home to […]
This was the scene shortly before noon Monday at Deception Pass, where fog rolled in, under and over the renowned span connecting Pass and Whidbey islands. A lone pedestrian stood at the railing at the time I took this photograph, but as it is August there was no shortage of highway travelers.
Many people don’t even realize Anacortes is on an island. A small public boat launch beneath the Duane Berentson Bridge (actually twin spans) offers the opportunity to step to the shores of Swinomish Channel, the ribbon of water separating Fidalgo Island from the Skagit mainland. If you don’t have a boat, pack a food basket […]
Blue skies and billowy white clouds drew me to LaConner yesterday afternoon, and I was rewarded with this photo of the Rainbow Bridge. This bridge is one of three spans linking Fidalgo Island with the Skagit Valley and Whidbey Island. There’s Berentson Bridge (twin bridges) over the Swinomish Channel, the Rainbow Bridge linking Fidalgo and […]
