These are just four of the volunteers who helped to make Christmas 2005 brighter this year for those who sought help from the Salvation Army Anacortes Corps. From left to right are caterer Laurie Kinslow and Christmas distribution volunteers Bruce and Joyce Rechtsteiner and Dora Stearns. Salvation Army officers Michael and Beth Paugh presided over […]
Chamber of Commerce executive Michael Broome “took it to the streets” Friday, operating a borrowed boom truck to hang Christmas banners along Commercial Avenue, the city’s retail business corridor. In addition to white lights in the downtown area, many merchants have decorated office and shop windows. Also, the Chamber offers free horse and carriage rides […]
Back in the day, before we had television screens to stare into, many people would spend hours during the Christmas season just walking Commercial Avenue to see special displays painstakingly prepared by merchants. It’s still a good idea, as evidenced by this window display at Maison et Jardin, 404 Commercial Avenue. Drop in and do […]
The morning sun poked through as hundreds gathered along Commercial Avenue for the annual Lions Club Christmas Parade Saturday in Anacortes. Lions “shared the stage” with many other organizations including the Kiwanis Club, represented here by Santa and a trailer-load of young helpers. As usual, the parade included local stars ranging from Mayor Dean Maxwell […]
Deck the halls with boughs of holly! It’s hard to believe it’s December 1 already. This year swept by faster than any in my life. With Christmas in mind, I spotted a holly bush out of the corner of my eye Wednesday afternoon. How can you miss the red on green?
Volunteers from the Anacortes Lions Club have contributed more than 150 hours of work lighting up historic Causland Park for Christmas. This photograph doesn’t do justice to the drama of the lights as seen at night. Check it out at the park, just one block off Commercial Avenue on 8th Street.
“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” Luke 2:11. This nativity scene, created by Caroline Spehar, stands in front of Anacortes Lutheran Church on “O” Avenue.
This photograph was taken inside Anacortes Lutheran Church, focusing on part of the stained glass window in the sanctuary. “At Christmas, we celebrate the birth of Jesus, whose life has influenced the human race more deeply than any other person in history. Where would we be if He had never come? But most of all, […]
Today and tomorrow are distribution days for volunteers working through the Salvation Army to deliver Christmas toys to area children. Pictured here in front of just one table of donated toys are Advisory Board member Ginger Houston (left) and Salvation Army Anacortes Corps Captain Beth Paugh. “Angel Tree” toys will be distributed today, with general […]
Middle School musicians strutted their stuff in the Lions Christmas Parade last weekend, marching up Commercial Avenue adorned in Santa hats. Music is an important element of community parades, and we had plenty of music thanks to this band and the Anacortes High School marching band.
Christmas lights shine up and down Commercial Avenue, with beautiful window displays including this one at Encore gift shop. This shop features a variety of handcrafted gifts created by local artisans, who encourage their neighbors to shop at home for the holidays.
These young musicians from Anacortes High School were among dozens of students who braved cold wind last weekend to provide live music at the lighting of the community Christmas tree. Also taking part in the evening ceremony were choirs from the high school and Fidalgo Elementary School. (See Holiday Music under Activities section)
