Okay, who among you knows how to describe a gathering of starfish such as this one I photographed Thursday at the Coupeville wharf? Don’t think I’ve ever seen this many starfish together at one time, even though the pilings near Seafarers’ Memorial boast a few during low tide.
I discovered this beauty while investigating tourism options Thursday in historic Coupeville. This skeleton of a stellar sea lion is among three skeletons hanging from the lobby ceiling of the wharf building. The others are a porpoise and a young gray whale. The closest thing I know of in Anacortes is the whale bone on […]

My travels this morning included a visit to the Coupeville Wharf, where this orca skeleton is among items in a display celebrating the fact that we no longer capture these so-called “killer whales.” A local connection is photographs and news articles by Anacortes resident Wallie Funk, editor and publisher of the Whidbey News-Times in the […]
It was a combination power lunch and sentimental journey for me Thursday when I joined this group of community journalism “characters” at Flounder Bay Restaurant. Instigator of the gathering was Wallie Funk, ex-newspaper publisher and one-time employer of several in attendance. Pictured are Kasia Pierzga, publisher of the Whidbey Examiner; Dave Pinkham, publisher of the […]
I left the island to visit neighboring Whidbey Island over the weekend. A Saturday stroll down memory lane in Coupeville yielded a small collection of photos including this “swimsuit edition” of an old, colorized postcard in the window of the Grace Cottage shop. Note figurine in left hand corner. Same theme.
