Canoe Bridge under wraps

Views of Canoe Pass and Deception Pass bridges from south bank of Fidalgo Island. Contractors are doing repair work and paint removal before finishing with a new coat of paint. This project is under the umbrella of the state Department of Transportation.

Black oystercatchers

I settled in for awhile this morning at Rosario Beach to observe and photograph a handful of Black Oystercatchers. These shorebirds can be difficult to spot against dark rocks and tidal vegetation, but my job was made easier by morning sun illuminating bright orange beaks. Standing in the rain

Standing in the rain at Bowman Bay in Deception Pass State Park. A statue placed in tribute to young men who worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps, created by President Franklin Roosevelt during the Depression years of the 1930s. CCC crews completed many projects, both on Fidalgo and Whidbey island sides of the park.

Peace and the paddleboarder

Except for a solo fisherman, this paddleboarder had Cranberry Lake all to herself Tuesday morning. Solitude becomes a rare thing at Deception Pass Park as summer months bring more people than ever at an already popular state park.

Lakeside madrona grove

This beautiful spot is located just a few yards from the main road to the West Beach/Cranberry Lake area of Deception Pass State Park. Can’t wait for the “all clear” that will allow us access to this park once again.
