Work on water

Most on the water during these first busy summer days are on an adventure. Not so for many working boats such as this crab boat moving through Deception Pass from Cornet Bay. What an incredible few days we’ve had in terms of weather…

Bridge and beach

This photo was taken at about 8:45 Wednesday evening from a bluff above North Beach on the Whidbey side of Deception Pass State Park. This spectacular park is a great place to be at any time of day during the summer months.

Spring greens

I discovered this photograph in sifting through images collected last year. It’s a late April shot, which reminds me we have some beautiful spring days to look forward to. One of the features of the software program I use for digital photographs is the ability to select a color from a photo and reproduce it […]

Maiden’s birthday

Thanks to a letter to the editor from historian Dick Fallis, I was reminded that today is the 22nd anniversary of the dedication of the “Maiden of Deception Pass” story pole at Rosario Beach. The pole, sculpted by local carver Tracy Powell, was commissioned on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Skagit County. The […]

Fog rolls in

This was the scene shortly before noon Monday at Deception Pass, where fog rolled in, under and over the renowned span connecting Pass and Whidbey islands. A lone pedestrian stood at the railing at the time I took this photograph, but as it is August there was no shortage of highway travelers.

Under the bridge

I waved from my vantage point on Pass Island, but the folks in this Nordic Tug failed to take the option of swinging to shore to make me part of their weekend adventure. Maybe I should hang out at marinas, where the boarding process is a bit less challenging.

Below the bridge

Cory Walken and Jennifer Multari of Seattle enjoy the Friday afternoon sun in the grass beneath Deception Pass Bridge. This photograph is taken from Pass Island looking toward Whidbey Island.

Subliminal bridge

I waited quite a while this morning for the fog to lift at Deception Pass, but the bridge was still shrouded when I left. This was the view from Pass Island toward Whidbey. The fog makes for some beautiful photographs, but when it’s thick it can make the crossing a bit stressful for travelers, especially […]

Hit the beach

Tip of the day…visit area beaches now, before the seasonal crowds begin to build. This is a view of North Beach from a path just below the Deception Pass Bridge. Lots of great memories, including the days when we would pack the kids up for a picnic and a romp in the sand. Crowds are […]

Marine highway

I couldn’t help but be envious of those aboard this boat, speeding under Deception Pass Bridge on a recent afternoon. Spring’s just around the corner, I told myself. Trout fishing season is already opening in Eastern Washington. Before long I’ll be sitting in a friend’s boat with a line in the water … not a […]

Deception Pass plaque

This commmemorative plaque is attached to a large rock on Pass Island at the center of Deception Pass. It was donated in 1935 (the year the bridges were completed) by the Ann Washington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). It reads: Deception Pass. Named by Captain George Vancouver 10 June 1792. Feeling […]

Bridge in the shadows

Millions of motorists cross this bridge each year without even realizing it. This handsome stone span is in Deception Pass State Park, just over “The Bridge” on the Whidbey Island side of the state’s most popular park. Two lanes of Highway 20 traffic pass over the bridge, but because of its low profile and its […]
