New Year rainfall let up on Sunday, January 3, a development that drew enthusiastic crowds to Deception Pass State Park: both Fidalgo and Whidbey sides. On this trip I ventured onto a trail that runs adjacent to the beach from the park amphitheater to the bridges. I have walked the same trail from the east […]
It was as though a “Nature Alert” went out on everyone’s cell phones. With just a handful of days remaining in 2020, I encountered dozens of like-minded folks enjoying a sunny afternoon on Fidalgo and Whidbey islands. Hikers, beach walkers, kayakers, power boaters … they dressed in layers (most including face masks) and headed for […]
I rarely see bald eagles in the trees east of Canoe Pass (too much bridge traffic?), so I was pleased the other day to discover this beauty stationed on a large snag.
This fly fisherman took advantage of beautiful weather Tuesday to load up his gear and spend some quality time on tranquil Pass Lake on the south end of Fidalgo Island. No motors, so he provided his own paddle power from the launch.
Every once in awhile I take a photo that prompts me to convert to black and white. Such was the case Tuesday with this slow shutter image I shot from the east tip of Pass Island, just south of Fidalgo Island.
An adventurous boater powers through waves, moving west to east at Deception Pass on a December afternoon.
Kukutali, which in the native Swinomish Tribal language means “place of cattail mats,” is a wonderful near-island managed in partnership between the tribe and state parks. Walk a narrow band of land to this place of beach and forest. Beautiful trees tower above on the forest trail, with many madrona trees growing both in forest […]
With Deception Pass Bridge paint/repair contractors “on pause” for a couple of winter months, paths on the center island of the Pass are accessible again. And what a view it was Sunday afternoon as the current swirled below! Elements of protective shrouding on the bridge are visible to the right.
With bridge paint and repair contractors gone for a few winter weeks, I took the opportunity Sunday to visit Pass Island at Deception Pass. There I was treated to what I assume was a U.S. Coast Guard training exercise. This vessel made several passes back and forth through swiftly moving currents at Deception Pass before […]
Given seasonal changes in weather and flora, my attention was drawn to the earth on a recent trip to the West Beach area of Deception Pass State Park. Pictured here are many of the mushrooms I discovered on a walk through lakeside forest and shoreside sand dunes. Impressive (especially those I discovered growing in the […]
A man, a woman and their dog, enjoying a cool, gray Saturday afternoon on a bluff above Deception Pass.
It was exciting last Saturday to see so many Northwesterners outside enjoying the natural attributes of this amazing corner of the state. I saw kayakers, paddleboarders, horseback riders, hikers, boaters and beach walkers. They were young, old … families and friends. I saw cameras, cellphones and binoculars, all being utilized to add images to memory […]
