Fish on!

A trout on the line breaks with a splash to the surface of Heart Lake. This trout, taken during the annual Kids Fishing Derby, stayed on the line before moving quickly from net to boat.

Top trout

Twelve year old Adam Paszkowski of Anacortes pulled this 4 lb. 9 oz. beauty out of a recently stocked Heart Lake at the annual Kids Salmon Derby sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. Lots of fish, lots of fun …

Sure Strike

Among hundreds of Northwest fishing fans gathered last weekend for the Anacortes Salmon Derby was George McLeod, founder of the Sure Strike frozen bait company (right, checkered coat). McLeod, visiting here with Cap Sante Boat Haven Harbormaster Dale Fowler (standing), established the renowned company more than four decades ago. Fowler says of the Lake Campbell […]

Top two fish

Wide grins followed presentation of checks to top fishermen at Sunday afternoon’s culminating ceremony of the Anacortes Salmon Derby. Pictured here with the top two fish are $15,000 winner Mike Campion (left) of Bellingham and $5,000 second place winner Pat Barton of Anacortes. Campion’s fish weighed 18.96 pounds, followed closely by Barton’s at 18.74.

No losers

Salmon or not, no one loses when they choose to participate in the Anacortes Salmon Derby. A day on the water often yields views like this one looking toward Canada from the Cypress Island shoreline. Whether you catch a fish or not, the Fidalgo Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers hosts a great party under […]

Derby man

Anacortes Salmon Derby hauncho Jay Field motored through the islands today on day one of the two-day event, which put 1,000-plus competitors on the water. We didn’t get any action on our boat, and didn’t hear reports of too many fish, so it sounds like day two will be critical for those seeking to avoid […]

Potential prize

Because the Anacortes Salmon Derby is part of the Northwest Salmon Derby series, participants qualify for an end-of-season drawing for this boat. The boat is displayed near the Cap Sante Boat Haven Harbormaster’s office, just a stone’s throw from the Big Tent where this weekend’s derby activities will be coordinated. Official derby days are Saturday […]

Winning big

He had to wait anxiously through day two to confirm his win, but Ralph Thomas prevailed in the No. 1 position at the Anacortes Salmon Derby with a 27.48-pound fish. In addition to his daughter Maya, Thomas was joined on stage by his congressman, U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks, who just happened to be a derby […]

Derby Day Two

It’s Anacortes Salmon Derby Day Two, and I’m on the water again with brother-in-law Captain Jim Keith of Fox Island Charters. Let’s hope today brings a bit more than conversation and scenic photos…

Lunker on parade

It’s not big enough for the top prize, but Seth Baumgarten of Kirkland caught a beauty Sunday morning as a competitor in the Anacortes Salmon Derby. This salmon weighed in at 24.38 pounds, which earned Baumgarten third place and $2,500. More results, visit

Top fish on display

For top fish wannabes, this was a “read it and weep” scenario Sunday at the 2010 Anacortes Salmon Derby. Ralph Thomas took the $15,000 top prize with this 27.48-pound beauty, displayed on ice outside the entrance to the “Big Tent” at Cap Sante Boat Haven. See for details.

Dash One on patrol

It’s a sad day when my top salmon derby photo was this shot of derby organizer Jay Field checking out the action among fishermen assembled at Cypress Island. That’s Eagles Bluff in the background, Jay’s “Dash One” in the foreground. The only fish I saw after a day with lines in water was a nice […]
