What a great time of year to visit downtown Anacortes, “all dressed up” with hanging baskets, sidewalk displays and colorful banners. Take a walk, enjoy a snack or a meal, a cup of coffee or a pastry … and stop in to see one or two of the many “niche” shops that contribute to making […]
Flags flew in Anacortes Monday in recognition of Columbus Day. As usual, there was a flurry of morning activity as merchants settled in for a new week of business, shoppers stopped to pick up coffee, pastries, supplies or gifts … all in keeping with the philosophy: “Support Your Local Business.”
Sporting a bold new look is Sasso’s Restaurant at 701 Commercial in downtown Anacortes. It’s a great time of year to wander the streets of Anacortes, and to support our local restaurants during this “shoulder season” between summer and the holidays.
Beautiful weather and the burning desire to score on a bargain drove thousands to Commercial Avenue in downtown Anacortes Saturday for another great Shipwreck Day. See more photos in Activities section. Today’s feature, compliments of the Chamber of Commerce, is a free Car Show. See the classics shine in the summer sun.
It’s Week Two for Sasso’s Restaurant at its new downtown location. Sasso’s, formerly located on the south end of Commercial Avenue, moved last week to 701 Commercial Avenue. Owners George and Stacia (pictured) are excited to have diners visit their new downtown digs, where their menu of “Northwest Cuisine” includes tasty items ranging from crepes […]
This new neighborhood of homes is just a block from downtown Anacortes, located on the long-vacant lot between Causland Park and the City Library. In a few months even more folks will call the area their home as public housing apartments will be made available in a renovated New Wilson Hotel on Commercial Avenue.

It was just about dinner time on Thanksgiving when this beautiful rainbow appeared, planting one foot in downtown Anacortes. Minutes later there was a double rainbow, the outer arch more faint than the first. To our delight, the rainbow lingered with strong, vibrant bands of color for quite awhile.
It’s interesting to hear among local political candidates that we need to build our retail base. Seems to me to be more of a “grassroots” issue than one of local government. We’ve got some great little businesses here, but many are not getting the customer volume they need to remain healthy. Maybe high gas prices […]
Downtown Anacortes streets were alive with activity Wednesday. Block renovations, hanging baskets and sidewalk planters all contribute to a brighter, more inviting historic district.
You can’t make a visit downtown without noticing the street improvement project between 10th and 11th streets. Included as part of this project is creation of a support system for an arch that will span Commercial Avenue and welcome guests to the community. Weather permitting, look for this project to take the fast track.
With a newly painted face, renovation of this building on the 9th Street block of Commercial Avenue is almost complete. Work on the building has not gone unnoticed. In fact, Mayor Dean Maxwell recently honored contractor Nels Strandberg with the Mayor’s Beautification Award for the project. Housed in the building, from left to right, are […]
