Baker begs to be photographed

How can anyone enjoying a summer view of Mt. Baker and bays pass on the opportunity for a photograph? This couple on Fidalgo Island shoreline at Cap Sante boasted “his and hers” cameras. Fidalgo Bay merges with Padilla Bay in the distance.

Rosario tide pools beckon

Extreme low tides brought more visitors than usual this week to Rosario Beach and its popular tide pool walk. Deception Pass State Park volunteers stand by with information. “Stay on the yellow ropeline, please.” It is not uncommon to see schoolchildren on a visit, the kind Northwest memories are made of.

Thursday birds

Photos taken yesterday at Rosario, Cranberry Lake and the south side of Anacortes. Among birds I encountered were Canada Geese, bald eagle, flicker, merganser and harlequin duck. As usual, the noisy kingfisher eluded me.

Turkey vultures contemplate next move

A pair of turkey vultures wait on a breakwater at Cap Sante Marina. They flew away when I approached, but likely returned soon after as there was a dead deer on the beach below.

Elsie Mae returns to local waters

This elephant seal, nicknamed Elsie Mae, makes annual visits to the Fidalgo Island area, where she gave birth a few years ago. Local volunteers do their best to cordon off areas to keep curious humans at a distance.

Blue heron in trees: 2022

The Great Blue Heron should be named the official bird of Fidalgo Island. This beauty was dancing between tree branches at Bowman Bay in October 2022.
