“Welcome to Fidalgo Island.” Bald eagle perches in trees in line of sight to motorists passing across Deception Pass Bridge from Whidbey to Fidalgo. Same eagle, two different angles.
I encountered this eagle Wednesday morning, perched on a tree just over the Deception Pass Bridge on the Fidalgo Island side. Another eagle was perched high on a snag on the other side of the highway.
Shimmering green head and orange feet pop in the afternoon sun. Mallards in pond on Fidalgo Island, as viewed through trees.
I love this time of year with fall light/temperature and the return of many birds including mallard ducks. This male and female mallard were part of a larger group finding plenty to eat on a Fidalgo Island pond.
This was a good day. The sun was just right when a group of kayakers in training approached Canoe Pass. I managed to get the car parked in time to catch a number of photos of the kayakers practiced moves including rolling their kayaks. Ultimately they headed off to make the turn toward Bowman Bay. […]
As demonstrated in this photo, Fidalgo Island’s Bowman Bay serves a wide array of Northwest adventurers, from beach walkers to kayakers. Also a draw at the park are picnic tables, interpretive center, shoreline trails and children’s play area. Oh, and we can’t forget the public restrooms!
Two of my favorite Fidalgo Island hiking areas, as viewed from North Whidbey at Deception Pass Park: Rosario Head (left) and Lighthouse Point.

Fidalgo Island bald eagle on an overcast May afternoon.
My walks/hikes always find me scanning for birds, high and low. This representation of three outings includes an osprey, bald eagle, house finch, red wing blackbird and sandpiper.
Bowman Bay on Fidalgo Island, beautiful from all angles. This perspective is from bluff trail linking the bay with Rosario.
Waves on the rocks. It was considerably more windy on top of Rosario Head than it was when I left the parking lot. A “hang onto your hat” afternoon.
