The Guemes ferry, for many decades a vital link between “Dog Island” and Fidalgo Island, which is served by bridges. A tiny vessel compared to state ferries coming in and out of town to the west. The ferry, operated by Skagit County, is scheduled to be replaced by an electric vessel.
The Washington State Legislature this week finalized a record $17 billion transportation package, which includes $14 million for Skagit County’s Guemes Ferry Replacement project. It will be passenger service only to Guemes Island for the next few days as the county-operated ferry suffered engine failure. Ferry Manager Steve Cox said the fix is estimated to take until next Tuesday or Wednesday. This was the scene on the Anacortes side of the Guemes run Friday morning.
