Hooded merganser takes flight over water near the Secret Cove restaurant on the Guemes Channel in Anacortes.
I wasn’t exactly speedwalking … too many distractions offshore this morning on the Guemes Channel. Among birds who cooperated for photos were mergansers, loons, golden eyes and scoters. No cooperation whatsoever from a hummingbird that teased me briefly before headed for upland trees. An island wonderland.
There were two male hooded mergansers and only one female … so I’m guessing this male’s posture and “audible” were intended to set himself apart.

My approach at pond’s edge sent this Hooded Merganser skittering across the surface of the water, which reflects the gold of the morning sun.
