Most who have lived in this area for any length of time are familiar with the EA6B “Prowler,” now retired after more than 40 years of storied military service. The jet flew out of NAS Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor. “In 1960, as part of the development of the A-6 Intruder all-weather attack aircraft, Grumman […]
One of my favorite stops at the NAS Whidbey Open House last weekend was a display featuring the one-time local naval aviation star: Grumman A6 ‘Intruder.” Presiding over the display was U.S. Navy Capt. Paul Bloch (Ret), a former Intruder bombardier navigator whose career dates back to the Vietnam War. Bloch, who is still a […]
It’s always exciting to visit NAS Whidbey in Oak Harbor when they open the doors to the public. These photos were taken on a 2011 visit.
What a day! After a three-year hiatus due to COVID restrictions, the U.S. Navy base in Oak Harbor opened its gates today for a well-attended Community Open House featuring SAR helicopters, electronic warfare aircraft, static displays, NW Navy Band, food, games and informational booths. Smiles all ’round. Fly Navy!

Cormorants fly toward Deception Pass, North Whidbey and naval air station in the distance.
On Friday, July 23, 2021 the Cougars of U.S. Navy Electronic Attack Squadron 139 held an airborne change of command ceremony during which Cdr. Adam Green of Anacortes was relieved by Cdr. Jacob Vrbas. The change of command orders were read and broadcast to an NAS Whidbey hangar audience as Green and Vrbas flew overhead. […]
The Boeing EA-18G Growler is a U.S. Navy carrier-based electronic warfare aircraft, a specialized version of the two-seat F/A-18F Super Hornet. This jet was photographed over North Whidbey Island, approaching Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.
Deserving of the “best kept secret” tag in the world of military aviation is the PBY-Naval Air Museum in downtown Oak Harbor. This proud little museum is a must for anyone, regardless of age, who appreciates airplanes, history and specifically, naval aviation on Whidbey Island. My grandson and I had a wonderful time at the […]
U.S. aircraft carrier USS Nimitz was redeployed to the Gulf this week. Reuters reports that Commander Rebecca Rebarich, spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy’s Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet, said the redeployment was related to a U.S. drawdown in Iraq and Afghanistan. Among those deployed on the Nimitz earlier this year is VAQ-139 of NAS Whidbey. (Photo from […]
I’m always ready to grab my camera when U.S. military aircraft cross our Northwest skies. Photos here range from “Growler” electronic countermeasures jets to a “Poseidon” submarine hunter and a U.S. Air Force “Globemaster” that partners with the Navy to transport troops and cargo. Photos were taken in Anacortes, at Deception Pass State Park and […]
Today, September 21, 2009, marks the 67th anniversary of the establishment of Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in Oak Harbor. This is an aerial photograph of the air base’s Ault Field. The Navy’s “Seaplane Base” is located a few miles away, near downtown Oak Harbor. It was this base that drew my parents together. Both […]
