> A great day for birds. Both blue heron and osprey photographed in Anacortes, just a short drive from home!
Ospreys, otherwise known as “seahawks,” are making themselves known all over the city these days. My sightings within the past week have been at Ship Harbor, Cap Sante Marina and AHS Memorial Plaza overlooking the stadium. An amazing, beatiful bird with a distinctive call.
An osprey watches over its nest on the shoreline of Anacortes.
An osprey perches on a pole just a few yards from the shoreline of Fidalgo Bay in Anacortes.
I had the good fortune this afternoon of watching an osprey “fish” local waters at the Guemes Trail. The tide was out so the action was quite a distance, but I had the opportunity to watch three dives … two yielding fish. It’s always a delight to watch this amazing bird.

An osprey, nicknamed the “seahawk,” heads east for a nest. With breakfast!
I was glad to have my camera ready when this osprey circled and then returned to its nest Saturday morning. There was lots of chatter between the nest and another “seahawk” perched on a nearby snag. Beautiful birds, fascinating to watch!
Osprey returns to nest on Fidalgo Island shoreline.
I photographed three ospreys this morning. Two never left their perches. The seahawk in flight might have been the same bird, a few hundred yards and 20 minutes between photo opps. Gorgeous birds.
Encounters this morning on the Anacortes shoreline. River otters moved very quickly from sea to uplands cover.
Go Seahawks! I had a treat today at Ship Harbor when I discovered six ospreys gliding over Ship Harbor at low tide. One of them went into “hover mode,” then dove successfully for lunch. Two of these beauties headed east, four toward the wetlands west of the ferry terminal.
