Despite the scarcity of sunshine, garden roses have begun to respond to the warmth of the season. Can’t wait for Mr. Lincoln, our most aromatic rose.
It’s wonderful, isn’t it, how our sense of smell can operate something like the “wayback machine” of TV cartoons? When I smell wild roses I am immediately reminded of my childhood in Anacortes, days mostly spent in the vicinity of 33rd Street and “M” Avenue.
We spent time in the yard yesterday in anticipation of rain today. This beautiful rose began to unfold in the warmth of the June sun. Wind and rain are tough on flowers, so this one will likely end up inside.

Even though the summer sun has sent us looking for shade on occasion, our roses have flourished. It seems that it was only a couple of weeks ago the rose bushes were bare. Today, blossoms are opening by the dozens. Apples are coming on, too, so there are treats for the eye and for the […]
After a few days of intense weeding (not my favorite chore), I spent some time without implements, wandering through with camera to enjoy our garden. This little insect was also taking advantage of the afternoon sun, poking about on the petals of a pink rose. It’s been a great year for roses, and our apples […]
