An encounter with two immature eagles on a Fidalgo Island beach prompted me to put together this small collection of images in black and white. Grateful to spend a few minutes in their world.
Recently added at the beautiful Ship Harbor Interpretive Preserve in west Anacortes were a number of interpretive signs including “snapshots” of local flora and fauna. Visitors are greeted by a large sign featuring a hovering osprey and a snapshot history: “Stepping into the Story of Ship Harbor.” Acknowledgments are made to organizations including the Port […]
Fidalgo Bay and Mt. Baker serve as a backdrop to this icy stretch of shoreline on the east side of March’s Point. It’s a great time of year to grab binoculars and/or a camera to observe shorebirds.
As usual, the pace is hectic at Dakota Creek Industries (DCI) shipyard on the Guemes Channel. Dredging by DCI contractor Pacific Pile and Marine is taking place in the foreground for improvements that will include new docking facilities. In the background, the state ferry “Sealth” stands in drydock for maintenance. This project includes cleanup of […]
Those who enjoy the Tommy Thompson Trail also enjoy views like this one. This shoreline path is a special community asset.

The mill closed in the Eighties, and a subsequent fire left a twisted mess in its wake. Today there are tentative plans to reclaim the site, which […]
Dad and Mom returned home last night from a couple of weeks on the East Coast. Their visit was great, but as always, they were happy to head home to Anacortes. Scenes like this one on the east shore of Cap Sante help to explain why we love Fidalgo Island.
This photograph of the city’s Fidalgo Bay shoreline was taken from Cap Sante. Prominent buildings include the Port’s South Harbor Park building, NW Educational School District 189 offices, Water’s Edge fitness club, Ace Hardware and the Middle School.
A curious onlooker leans into his view at Seafarers’ Memorial in downtown Anacortes, where work continues on a cleanup of the former Scott Paper Mill site. Just offshore is a crew from Pacific Pile and Marine, contracted by the Port of Anacortes.
