Prolonged cold

Heavy snow is not the norm in this region, and prolonged snow and cold are definitely out of the ordinary. There was some melting Thursday, as evidenced by this photograph, but temperatures remained below freezing for the bulk of the day, and there was a sprinkling of new snow to bury efforts to produce dry […]

School’s out

It was still snowing in south Anacortes this morning (Wednesday) when I took this shot of a small garden decoration. Last night’s snow was enough to convince local school officials to close for the day. The first two days of the week drew “late arrival” decisions as parents and bus drivers did their best to […]

Snowy welcome

A brieft jaunt into the county Monday brought me back to town on Highway 20. I stopped for a seasonal photo of the welcome sign on the pullout just outside of town. The small park is maintained by the Sunrisers Kiwanis Club. Restoration work was accomplished recently on a huge slab taken from 970-year-old tree. […]

Persistence

Despite a snow covering this morning, there is evidence that the vibrant colors of spring will soon decorate our gardens. This beautiful sprout, snow-covered just hours ago, is now basking in afternoon sunshine.

As predicted, snow began to fall in Anacortes early Saturday morning. The good news: accumulation in not anticipated.

Snow day

School’s out in Anacortes! Kids in the neighborhood bundled up and headed for the hill at daybreak, packing the snow so the sun won’t melt it so quickly.

Morning surprise

It may not have been a surprise to weather forecasters (or school bus drivers), but I was surprised to find a blanket of snow in the neighborhood this morning. Time to slip on some heavy socks and boots.

December dusting

We were welcomed to December this morning by a light dusting of snow, at least on the south side of the city. Reports call for the possibility of more snow, turning to rain as the week progresses.

Chilly city

This Thursday afternoon perspective looks down on a chilly city as afternoon temperatures begin to drop. See more photos in Activities section under “Snow on the rock.” It was 21 degrees Friday a.m. with a high of about 30 degrees projected.

Snow delays

Snow and ice have “sculpted” scenes like this all over Anacortes Wednesday night. It’s Thursday morning, and weather forecasts call for sun, wind and temperatures in the 28-35 degree range. At this writing it’s 23 degrees outside. I had to move my car off the street, which required entry from the rear door as passenger […]

Snow-capped Cap

This young man and I were the only visitors to Cap Sante at 3 p.m. Thursday, but before we left two other vehicles had pulled in to an ice-capped parking lot. Views were excellent, but it was cold. Tomorrow is expected to be sunny and cold again. School buses, mail vehicles and delivery trucks will […]

A powdering

It wasn’t much compared to November’s snow, but I awakened Wednesday to find a light layer of the white stuff in the neighborhood. Snow and ice beautifully decorated the leaves of this garden plant.
