A closer look at The Maiden

Yesterday on a hike at Rosario Beach I decided to examine and record some of the details carved into LaConner sculptor Tracy Powell’s “Maiden of Deception Pass” story pole, commissioned by the Samish Indian Nation in the early Eighties. An incredible piece of work.

Carver Kevin Paul

Carver Kevin Paul of La Conner has visited Anacortes almost daily as he continues work on a story pole at Whitney Elementary School. The carving, which features an eagle and a killer whale, is the centerpiece of a social studies segment regarding Northwest Native American culture.
