Fishing Fidalgo Bay

My Wednesday walk on the Tommy Thompson Trail was disappointing in terms of birds … but then this Caspian Tern dove into the bay to give me a photo opp. The tern thrives in the Pacific Northwest.

Beloved Tommy train to stay

In a 5-2 vote Monday night, Anacortes City Council members voted to reject an outside offer to purchase and relocate the custom train built by the late Tommy Thompson. An advisory group will now be established to consider next steps regarding possible display/operation of the train, currently housed in a shelter at The Depot in […]

Seasonal colors

These bright berries and color-coordinated leaves caught my eye while on a Tommy Thompson Trail walk Wednesday morning. Cool nights contribute to dramatic developments on the landscape. Embrace the change, right?

Railroad owners: Tommy & Anne

Anacortes Railway Co. owners Anne and Tommy Thompson. Tommy hand-built this locomotive and passenger cars, operating several years on a narrow gauge track between 4th Street and the Calico Cupboard Restaurant on Commercial Avenue. Art Dash

A record-setting 250-plus runners participated Saturday morning in the 2009 Anacortes Art Dash, a 5K/10K routed along the scenic Tommy Thompson Trail. Train on the Avenue

A recent acquisition was a film scanner, so I’ve been going through my archives. I located this shot, Tommy Thompson’s narrow gauge train, from my early Eighties collection. Tommy (center, in cap) used to run the train temporarily on Commercial Avenue before a more permanent route was established between the Anacorte Depot and the Calico […]

Framed mural

A popular Bill Mitchell mural of narrow gauge railroad builder Tommy Thompson is framed by the orange leaves of a tree on the corner of 9th and Commercial Avenue. Thompson posed for a photo with his wife, Anne, and Mitchell later converted the photo into an outdoor mural.

Tommy in the snow

During the course of the past few months I have taken several photos of this Bill Mitchell mural on the north side of the Calico Cupboard Restaurant. Type in “Tommy Thompson” in the search window above and you’ll note how the seasons change in our little corner of the world. The mural shows Tommy Thompson […]

Progress on parkway

Dramatic things are happening at Weaverling Spit as work continues on the Tommy Thompson Parkway Trail. This photograph was taken Sunday at Fidalgo Bay Resort, where railroad ties and tracks are piling up as a trail is created on the abandoned Burlington Northern line. This exciting project will ultimately tie South March Point Road to […]

A railroad is born

This is a drawing that was reproduced on the front page of the Anacortes American 40 years ago, illustrating Tommy Thompson’s dream of a small scale railroad line in Anacortes. The train became a reality, much to the delight of thousands who took a ride on the steam-powered train over the years. But Tommy did […]
