I’m glad Fidalgo Island has healthy rural areas. Would love to know the back story on this piece of farm equipment.
Once again this year, Loren Smith’s 1937 John Deere tractor is at work in a nearby hayfield. Back in the day, the area south of 22nd Street in Anacortes was known as the Southside. Many homes boasted gardens, chickens and cows.
This 1954 Ford NAA tractor was among a number of tractors displayed last weekend at the annual Anacortes Antique Engine & Machinery Show. The tractor is owned by Roland and Greg Greenfield of Anacortes. See “Steamy event” entries in Activities section for more photos from the show.
The sound of a 1937 John Deere engine is distinctive. It was for my wife, who heard tractor owner Loren Smith moving down “O” Avenue to Longview Friday evening. When he’s done with his annual chores at a nearby hay field, Smith rolls slowly back to his home off 32nd Street.
Someone’s getting his money’s worth out of this piece of equipment. This industrious tractor owner has been working the area lately, as evidenced by bales left behind in a handful of grassy fields. Reminiscent of days gone by, when the city’s “South Side” had a rural character.
