It’s the water

Whether it’s a solo kayak trip or a San Juan Islands ferry adventure, summertime in the Northwest draws many to the water.

Watery wonderland

Water levels are very high at the Ship Harbor Interpretive Preserve adjacent to the state ferry terminal. Rainfall runoff flows from surrounding highlands to the wetland below, with much of the water ultimately feeding into the saltwater harbor. A beautiful season to enjoy the wooden boardwalk that meanders through wetlands. Already there are signs of […]

‘Boat City’

This photo from 38th Street in south Anacortes demonstrates how important boating is to this community. Among marinas visible here on the shore of Fidalgo Bay are Cap Sante Marina (950 slips, approx. 100 transient), Fidalgo Marina (55 slips) and Anacortes Marina (466 slips). Also visible are upland storage facilities, some offering marine services. Other […]

Progress continues

A birdseye view of progress at the Anacortes Water Treatment Plant on the Skagit River in Mount Vernon. The round foundation is for a tank, and plans call for eventual replacement of the building on the right. See www.cityofanacortes.org for more information about the project.

Major project

Crews continue to work below ground level as construction continues at the Anacortes City Water Treatment Plant in Mount Vernon. The project, essentially a re-build of a 40-year-old plant, will be complete in mid-year 2013. The Skagit River, which occasionally floods in this area, is located just beyond the dike at the top of this […]

Loaded and ready

If it’s August, it must be time for water balloons. I discovered this colorful stash at a weekend picnic. There were no “survivors” from this collection.

Seasonal water fun

This photograph of “pirates” and tugboat was taken last summer at the Anacortes Work Boat Race. That event will take place again this year (even MORE pirates) on Shipwreck Day, July 17, but in the meantime, there will be plenty of other opportunities for fun on or near the water. Mark your calendars now for […]

Biz Point rescue

Two teen-aged boaters were rescued Tuesday night off Biz Point after their “Sunfish” sailboat capsized. First on the scene at about 8 p.m. were a couple of neighbors in a rowboat and small skiff. They were soon joined by the crew of the Crowley tug “Response,” which had been diverted by the U.S. Coast Guard. […]

Droplets

I’m not sure if it was fog or rain that resulted in these droplets taking up temporary residence on a rosebud in our garden. Regardless, the tiny pink orb caught my eye on an otherwise gray, dreary morning.

It WAS a water festival…

I was just a little bit late with the camera on this shot Sunday at the Waterfront Festival. Anacortes High School students Ryan Broussard and Hillary Pressentin jumped together into the chili waters of Cap Sante Boat Basin, followed by their friend, Andrea Pitz. I’m not sure if there was a bet involved, but I […]
