Access limited at Park: West Beach

Washington State Parks notes that “Your visit to Deception Pass State Park will look a bit different this year as park staff steward its recovery from winter storms.” In January 2024, the West Beach parking lot was damaged in several areas and littered with large debris. Ahead of the park’s busiest seasons, park staff is […]

Walkabout at Deception Pass

It was, as always, an invigorating adventure. With the number of days slipping by in 2023, I decided Friday that I needed a healthy dose of Deception Pass State Park (pun intended). Before the afternoon was over I had walked West Beach and the dune forest trail between beach and lake. I had photographed fishermen […]

AHS students make long-term contribution: 2006

It was the 2005-06 school year when Anacortes High School students in Victor Garcia’s Marine Science class worked with Anacortes artist Mike Stark to create 13 panels for the Dunes Interpretive Trail at Deception Pass State Park. The panels still serve today to enlighten trail walkers regarding the beach/dunes/forest/lake ecosystem.

Jaden is honing his skills with a new drone, building an inventory of stills and video. This shot is a bird’s-eye view of West Beach, looking south. […]

Doing battle with invasive plants

I entered a war zone Thursday afternoon when I encountered a four-person team at Deception Pass State Park, West Beach dune area. These members of the Washington Conservation Corps have been working all week at the park, pulling out invasive species in the dune/forest area east of Cranberry Lake. Among non-native plants on the hit […]

Eagles in the neighborhood

I noticed today on a Facebook post the frustration expressed by a photographer who discovered only one eagle on an Upriver Skagit outing. These four photos are all taken “in the neighborhood” over the past few days, two at sites seasonally occupied by ospreys. Two lakeside, two near saltwater shores. I can never get […]
