There are many great blue herons in our region, especially along saltwater shorelines. I photographed this heron tucked away in a wetland area adjacent to the beach at Ship Harbor in Anacortes.

Tomorrow, December 21, is the first day of winter. I celebrated “Winter’s Eve” with a rain-free walk at the Ship Harbor Interpretive Preserve (SHIP). Fine feathered friends

I can’t imagine a better morning. My “breakfast time” adventure featured opportunities to photograph a number of beautiful Fidalgo Island birds, some of which offered songs. Also part of the morning but not photographed were herons and crows. Mostly little birds, the largest being the flicker.

Deer crosses wetland

A deer that had been eating near the beach at Ship Harbor moves quickly into a wetland area after noticing an approaching beachwalker and her dog.
