Scenes from this weekend excursion actually were photographed on a Saturday morning, but the title “Sunday drive” seemed a more appropriate fit. I love “old town” Anacortes, especially that residential area located north of 12th Avenue and west to Steinman’s Grocery. We used to rent a house on 8th Street, and spent many hours as newlyweds strolling up and down these streets dreaming of the home we would someday own. Our first little house was a 900-square-foot post-and-block home on 4th Street, just a few hundred yards from the Port of Anacortes log yard. We moved to our current home when “the baby” was a 1-year-old. That’s more than 18 years ago now…
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
