Christmas books

Window displays such as this one at Watermark illustrate the fact that Anacortes is home to several book stores. See www.anacortes.org and type in “books” to find details regarding downtown shops.

Toy distribution

Anacortes Salvation Army officers Jerold and Carol Forney stand among just some of the hundreds of toys and Christmas items that will be distributed this week among local families. Many families will also receive holiday food items, thanks to the generosity of the community. The Anacortes Corps is located on “R” Avenue. For more information […]

Christmas shops

Christmas merchandise is in, and window displays beckon among Anacortes shops, offices and restaurants. As is the case in most American communities, holiday shopping is vital to the health of many businesses. This counter display was created by the owner of Epicure, a kitchen shop at 714 Commercial Avenue (“For the passionate cook”). Do some […]

Ferry on wheels

A perennial “float” in Anacortes parades is this little ferry on wheels, a tribute to this community’s Sister Cities relationship with Sidney, British Columbia.

Under construction

Among Christmast trees being decorated today at the Port of Anacortes Transit Shed Event Center is this unique beauty, created in partnership between The Market at Anacortes and DASH, a non-profit women’s organization. Seasonal rush

Downtown Anacortes was bustling with activity Tuesday afternoon, despite ice and snow. The Post Office was a busy place too, as might be anticipated. Much of the activity, however, seemed to be focused on the acquisition of groceries. Lots of people hunkering down for the holidays. The clock is ticking on Christmas 2008, which looks […]

Shell ‘elves’

More than 100 volunteers including emergency responder Trevor Nipges (in bunker gear) represented Shell Puget Sound Refinery in the annual Anacortes Christmas Parade last Saturday. Shell firetrucks and volunteer crews play a prominent role in community parades. Candy canes and hacky sacks were among the treats distributed to children lining Commercial Avenue.

Christmas heirloom

There’s a reason this little nativity set looks worn. It belonged to my Grandpa and Grandma Berentson, who had four children and 20 grandchildren. I can guarantee you the figures were touched by many little hands, including mine. The story of Jesus Christ was not a seasonal one for my grandparents. Each of their children […]

Nativity scene

Included among the Santas in the 2007 Anacortes Lions Christmas Parade was this float sponsored by a local church. In Christian tradition, a number of children dressed up in roles to play shepherds, wise men, Joseph and Mary. All gathered around a baby doll in a manger, calling to mind the humble birth of Jesus […]

Clippity clop

The sights and sounds of Christmas in downtown Anacortes include the clippity clop of horses’ hooves as a free horse drawn carriage makes its way up and down Commercial Avenue. The horses wear a “blanket” of colored lights. This weekend the team based out of Maison et Jardin at 404 Commercial. The free rides continue […]

Canine Christmas

The parade wave was missing, but this little dachsund was a definite hit among parade goers in downtown Anacortes on Saturday, December 8.

Sunny day parade

This friendly trio of volunteers waved to an Anacortes Christmas parade crowd from the cab window of a Shell Puget Sound Refinery fire truck. Saturday was a beautiful day for a parade, and as usual the Lions Club invitation drew a great bunch of parade participants.
