For kids’ sake

A team of 18 volunteers from Shell Puget Sound Refinery was among many teams that gathered Saturday, March 11 for the annual “Bowl for Kids’ Sake” fund-raiser for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization. In the lane adjacent to Shell were volunteers from Tesoro, owner of the neighboring refinery on March’s Point. Tesoro was […]

Spring walk

I was on my way from photographing members of the Shell Puget Sound Plant First Responders team when I noticed this beautiful March’s Point resident on the refinery grounds. It’s not uncommon to see deer in pairs, but there may well have been one in hiding. The deer was understandably skittish, even though we were […]

Children’s Museum project

For two days in a row, a team of volunteers from Shell Puget Sound Refinery gathered with paint brushes at the Skagit Children’s Museum in downtown Mount Vernon. Friday and Saturday project work at the children’s facility ranged from assembly of shelf units to drywall repair and painting. Little hands are busy hands, so there […]

Shell cleans up

Shell Puget Sound Refinery made a big-time commitment to the environment last week, both inside and outside the plant fenceline. This crew focused its attention to a 1-mile stretch of Highway 20, “adopted” by the refinery as part of the state’s Adopt-a-Highway cleanup program. Back on Fidalgo Island, another crew took on the assignment of […]

Investment on wheels

There were clear skies Friday night as crews moved a 250-ton reactor from the Port of Anacortes to the Shell Puget Sound Refinery. The long-anticipated move began about 8 p.m., with a brief stop along undeveloped R Avenue property until the last state ferry unloaded its passengers. The equipment, part of the refinery’s Ultra Low […]

Fidalgo Bay

Cold, clear winter days present beautiful opportunities for photography. This photo of Shell Puget Sound Refinery and Mt. Baker was taken last week from the shoreline of Fidalgo Bay.

Calendar artists

These eleven artists came away with “blue ribbons” in a safety contest sponsored by Shell Puget Sound Refinery. Those pictured here, plus one young artist who couldn’t attend, were treated to cake and balloons Thursday at an event attended by first, second and third place winners in several age categories. The work of the first […]

Red-winged playground

This was the scene today at a wetlands restoration project on March’s Point Road, just across the highway from Similk Beach Golf Course. The corner and adjacent land are part of Shell Puget Sound Refinery’s wetlands restoration area. Cattails are a favorite perch among redwinged blackbirds.

Waterfront Festival: family fun

Set your alarm clock now so you don’t oversleep Saturday, May 22. You’ll want to be one of the first in line for all of the goodies, activities and entertainment options at the Anacortes Waterfront Festival. Pictured here from the 2003 Festival is Shell Anacortes Refinery volunteer Sandy Corrion, one of many refinery employees who […]

Sailin’ away the afternoon

From my living room window I counted at least a dozen boats, their sharp white sails standing in stark contrast against the deep blue water and moody skies above. With a few minutes to spare before we left for Whidbey Island, I grabbed my camera and drove to the waterfront to gather a handful of […]

Tanker moves to wharf

Crew members on this oil tanker, the Polar, will be away from their friends and families when the new year arrives. The Polar arrived under tug escort on a clear, crisp Monday afternoon, tying up at the Shell Puget Sound Refinery wharf to unload a shipment of crude oil.

Mayor takes spin in hybrid

Mayor Dean Maxwell (right) took a spin in the city’s new hybrid car Tuesday afternoon with Shell Puget Sound Refinery Manager Tom Smith riding shotgun. Shell donated $8,000 toward purchase of the 2004 Toyota Prius. Maxwell drove the car, then Smith took his turn behind the wheel. Both delivered a “thumbs up” verdict.
