Williams Gym had to be the most exciting place in town Friday as the AHS boys basketball team played host to the Sehome Mariners. In addition to sports fans, the event drew parents of young musicians playing in combined middle school and high school bands. In the third photo, Coach Rick Merganthaler talks to his team in a sideline huddle. Cheerleaders did their part, encouraging fans to support their team, but ultimately the Hawks fell to a high-energy opponent. Take the opportunity in the next couple of weeks to drop in to the gym to see both boys and girls teams (JV games precede varsity games). See www.asd103.org for a schedule.
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
