Winter storm

It was a long night for many in the Northwest, with high winter winds slamming communities up and down the coast. Scenes from Friday morning in Anacortes include an emergency crew in Skyline, a tree down in the front yard of the Channel House bed and breakfast on Oakes, a fence down on “O” Avenue and a madrona tree tipped against a house on “D” Avenue. The stoplight was out at the intersection of Oakes and “D,” with emergency stop signs in place and drivers doing their best to respond to the emergency. Schools are closed, primarily due to road hazards. Deception Pass Bridge was closed Thursday night for awhile, but re-opened Friday morning. Whidbey Island always takes a bigger hit from Northwest storms.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
