Thanksgiving 2007

Pictured here are Kelly Heiberg (right) and Mae-Louise Dopps, who stopped for a moment Thanksgiving morning in the dining hall of the Anacortes Eagles building. The Eagles and Auxiliary 249 sponsor a free community meal each year, drawing support from dozens of people and organizations to serve about 500 dinners. Heiberg leads the team, which includes daughter Leah Heiberg and Charlie Lindsay (preparing stuffing). About 27 turkeys were cooked, with other dinner favorites including 500 pounds of potatoes, 150 pounds of carrots and 25 pounds of celery. Thanks to all involved in this wonderful gift to the less fortunate in our community.

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
