High school thespians shine

The following is a statement by AHS drama teacher Scott Burnett regarding the current production titled “The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later”

“This is the most difficult play that I have ever asked my young actors to perform. It does not have the ‘normal’ dramatic arch with a storyline and consistent characters.”

“This is as close to a ‘documentary’ style as you can get in live theatre,” Burnett continued. “Rehearsals were hard work. The constant change of characters, the lack of normal dramatic conventions, and the fact that many of the characters they play are so different from them, made each rehearsal more challenging than usual. But these people understood the underlying message and put aside their ‘needs’ to work for the common good. I have developed a deep respect and love for these thoughtful, talented young people. It has been an honor to watch them work.”

About Photographer Steve Berentson

A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
