Anyone who frequents the local Starbucks shop on Commercial Avenue knows that it is a very busy place. Rumors of expansion have been floating for many months, but now the word on the street is there will be action sooner than later. With the neighboring Sprint store gone, it is reported that a move to incorporate that space may begin as early as next month. Walls will come down and the two will become one. Starbucks is a tenant, not owner of the building. In a related development, Starbucks’ landlord has applied for a permit to create new parking space immediately to the west of the drive-through window. Another Anacortes retail adventure!
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
