It was a sad day for me today to learn of the passing of Stan Boreson, an entertainment icon to any kid growing up in the Northwest in the Fifties and Sixties. Boreson was described by writer Erik Lacitis in today’s Seattle Times as “… the genial, accordian-playing host of a children’s show on KING-TV and a regular presence in Puget Sound area baby boomers’ lives.” Evidence of his connection with Anacortes comes with this photo, courtesy of Tesoro Refinery on March’s Point. Boreson, referred to by some as the “King of Scandinavian Humor,” is pictured here performing for refinery employees’ children at their 1962 Christmas party.
A fourth generation Skagit County native who was moved kicking and screaming from this island community in 1960. I finally reclaimed an Anacortes address in 1980, and I have been in constant celebration of my return since that time. Many of us who call Anacortes home love Fidalgo Island for its natural assets: among them are rugged beaches, pristine lakes, thousands of acres of forestland and some awesome views of the Skagit Valley and surrounding islands. Another element of my love affair with this community is its people, both natives and immigrants. They will “star” in many of my journal entries.
